Ability Vs. Behavior

Once upon a time, there was a company meeting. The purpose was to choose one among two branch managers (BM) to be appointed as a regional.

"Regional" means a person whose responsibility is controlling the whole region or province.

After the meeting, the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of that company decided to do the survey on his own. He went to meet those two BMs.

Because the CEO could not speak the language of that country, he hired a translator to go with him. They went to meet the first BM, whose age was around 35. That BM was pretty friendly and respectful. He seemed to be a reliable manager for his team. The CEO admired that all the staff in that branch really liked their BM, and they seemed to work together smoothly. Frankly, his behavior was pretty nice.

On the other hand, even he, the BM, had a good manner, but he was still lack of something else. Obviously, his knowledge is limited. He had no ability to speak the language besides his mother tongue. And his ability of using computer was not much. Also, he was not able to communicate with the foreign customers. Moreover, his research ability was too low as well. Totally, it might be difficult for him to deliver his knowledge to his team members. Thus, the CEO just kept him for consideration and waited to see another BM.

Another day, the CEO and his translator went to visit another branch in order to observe the last BM. Of course, when they first met each other, the CEO recognized BM’s ability. He was pretty good with his language use. He was able to talk directly with the CEO, and his ability to use a computer was good as well. Exactly, he can also work with foreigners.

Even though his knowledge was high, he also did many bad things in terms of his behavior. He was too aggressive. Most of the staffs in his controlled branch didn’t really like him. They seemed to work separately. And the way he talked seemed really rude. The CEO recognized that he (BM) even shouted at the security guards when they did a small thing wrong. He was not a good leader. His behavior can only work alone.

After two days of observation, the CEO decided not to choose even one.

You see! Ability without good behavior might be useless. It will make you more aggressive. In contrast, good behavior without knowledge is also not enough. As human beings, we need to have these two things in order to live our lives happily and make others happy as well.
